Triple Draw is a poker variant combining draw poker and lowball poker into a single game. The game starts with each player being dealt five cards, a betting round then follows, and then there are three rounds of draws with a betting round after each. During the draw, a player can discard any number of their cards to have them replaced with new ones; they can also elect not to draw any cards, which is called “stand pat”. The object of the game is to make the lowest poker hand possible.

There are two versions of triple draw played online, A-5 and 2-7. In Ace to Five Triple Draw A2345 is the best possible hand as straights (but not flushes) count in the hand. In Deuce to Seven Triple Draw, an ace is always high, so A2345 is not a straight. It is not even a very good hand considering Ace is the highest and it will only be able to beat a higher ace high hand, or a hand with a pair, straight or flush. In this game, the best possible hand is a non flush 2-3-4-5-7. Deuce to Seven is the more common game and is included in the World Series of Poker each year.

To determine who has the best low hand, for both A-5 and 2-7, what is first looked at is the highest card in a player’s hand. For example if a player has 2345Q this is a queen low and would be beaten by 6-7-8-9-J which is a jack low. Neither hand wins often at showdown in triple draw as a jack high is a poor hand, but we used this example to emphasize that while one hand had four cards lower than the other it still lost due to its highest card which is the first card examined in determining a winner. If two players have the same highest card, we then compare their second highest card, if the same we go to third highest, and so on and so forth till a winner is determined.
